The Meaning We Carry

Long before we recognise it, we begin making sense of our lives through the stories we quietly carry within us.

They help us understand where we have come from.

Why certain moments mattered.

Who we have become.

What our relationships mean.

What kind of future we believe is unfolding before us.

Most of these stories are not consciously chosen.

They emerge gradually, giving shape and meaning to experiences that might otherwise feel impossible to understand.

When the Story Remains

Stories are not the problem.

We could not make sense of our lives without them.

The difficulty begins when the story remains while reality has quietly continued unfolding.

A relationship changes.

A chapter comes to an end.

A role no longer asks the same of us.

Yet the meaning through which we continue interpreting those experiences belongs to a different time.

The story has remained.

Reality has continued unfolding.

Why We Continue Telling It

We do not continue an old story because we are unwilling to see.

More often, we continue it because it once helped us understand our lives.

It preserved continuity.

It honoured what mattered.

It allowed us to carry hope through uncertain seasons.

These are not signs of denial.

They are signs of being human.

The stories that shaped us deserve our respect.

When Meaning Begins to Change

There comes a moment when reality quietly begins asking more of us than the story we have been living through.

Not because the story was false.

Because it has completed the work it came to do.

The understanding that once served us so well no longer fully explains the life before us.

At first, this can feel unsettling.

Gradually, however, the distance between the story and reality becomes difficult to ignore.

Listening to Life Again

One of the quieter disciplines within consequential decisions is learning to notice the story through which we are interpreting the present.

Not so we can reject it.

Not so we can replace it.

But so we can gently ask whether it still belongs to the life we are now living.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes reality has already moved beyond it.

Recognising the difference is one of the quieter forms of understanding.

When the Story Changes

There is rarely a single moment when an old story comes to an end.

One day we simply notice that we have been explaining our lives in a way that no longer feels entirely true.

Nothing outside us may have changed.

Only our understanding.

The story no longer holds the whole of reality.

Reality has quietly become something more.

The Stories We Continue to Tell

The stories that shaped us do not become meaningless because life continues.

Many carried us through chapters we could not otherwise have understood.

They helped us become who we are.

Reality does not ask us to abandon those stories.

It simply asks whether they still belong to the life we are now living.
