When We Begin Looking Outside Ourselves

There are moments when life changes before we have understood what those changes mean.

A relationship no longer feels as it once did. A business enters unfamiliar territory. Plans that seemed dependable begin to loosen their hold on the future we expected. Reality starts rearranging itself while our understanding is still trying to make sense of what is unfolding.

It is often here that something quieter begins to happen.

Without realising it, we start looking outside ourselves for the certainty we no longer feel within. We search for reassurance in advice, opinions, predictions and possibilities, hoping that somewhere beyond us someone else can restore the clarity we feel we have lost.

This is often where consequential decisions become most difficult.

Losing Our Orientation

People rarely lose their ability to think.

More often, they lose the place from which they are thinking.

The conversation within us gradually changes. Instead of trying to understand reality, we begin trying to escape uncertainty. Every new opinion feels significant. Every possible outcome demands consideration. We become increasingly responsive to what might happen and less attentive to what is actually unfolding before us.

Reality asks to be understood.

Uncertainty asks to be relieved.

They are not the same.

When we mistake one for the other, we can quietly lose our orientation without ever recognising it.

The Quiet Nature of Poise

Poise is often mistaken for composure.

It is something much quieter than that.

It is not the absence of emotion, nor the appearance of confidence. It does not require certainty, and it is not achieved by suppressing doubt.

Poise is the ability to remain internally oriented while everything around us is still changing.

It is the quiet discipline of staying connected to reality while understanding is still unfolding, resisting the temptation to let urgency, fear or the opinions of others decide before understanding has had time to mature.

While Understanding Continues

Understanding rarely arrives as a single moment of certainty.

It gathers quietly.

A conversation reveals something that had previously gone unnoticed. Reality becomes easier to recognise. Acceptance settles a little further. Perspective shifts almost without us noticing.

Much of this happens beneath the surface, long before anything outwardly appears different.

When we abandon our poise too quickly, we often interrupt that process. We move not because understanding has become complete, but because the discomfort of uncertainty has become difficult to carry.

Returning to Ourselves

There will always be seasons when the future cannot yet be seen clearly.

Questions remain unanswered. One chapter has ended, while another has not yet revealed its shape. Life continues asking us to participate even while our understanding is still catching up with reality.

Poise does not remove uncertainty.

It helps us remain connected to ourselves while we move through it.

It preserves the place from which understanding continues to deepen, allowing our decisions to emerge from reality rather than from our need to escape what remains unknown.

Holding Your Shape

The world around us may take time to find its new shape.

We need not lose our own.

Sometimes the first thing worth preserving is not certainty.

It is our orientation.

That place is poise.
